Sheep belching

Daily Lift - Silencing the LambsWall Street Journal, 26 February 2009
If a conversation this weekend calls for evidence of how insane the world is, then this should help you out. Farmers are worried that governments could start levying a tax on sheep belching. We kid you not. The production of methane by ruminant animals (sheep, cows, deer etc) eating grass is a greater threat to the environment than all the cars in the world. Scientists in New Zealand (a country with more sheep than people so a good place to experiment) are trying everything to stop the rot, including chloroform which can slow down methane production in the gut. Or kill the poor animal. We're at a very theoretical stage," says Simone Hoskin from Massey University in New Zealand. "A lot of people think we are insane." Quite.

Ha! Now will the kids start teasing you about reading something in the Wall Street Journal? And sheep burps of all things. Funny, but the same sort of problem has come up with cows before. As far as I know, noone has found a workable solution. Actually, there is one, we should all be vegetarians.

Even if we all become vegetarians, it won't solve the problem unless we kill all the sheep. That seems rather too bad...unless we want to become nudists as well. Although synthetic wool is a possibility? Interesting problem, but Mom, I don't think we'll tease Dad about the WSJ, that is a privilege reserved for you :)
